Research Proposal on Fluency of Multiplication Facts in Fourth Grade, Thesis of Financial Accounting

Education Related Research Topic
The education topic I chose for this research project is the fluency of multiplication facts in fourth
grade. This is a topic I am interested in because I work in a co-taught Algebra class in a high school
working with ninth graders where a majority of the students do not know their multiplication facts. As
with most math facts, students need to learn, and memorize, previous multiplication facts to build on
concepts they will learn in future grades. Multiplication facts are necessary for factoring, finding GCF,
and squaring numbers. When students do not have recall for multiplication facts, it takes more time to
solve problems, and thus students fall behind.

Education Related Research Problem
Repetition of multiplication facts has been a common problem among students in grades 4 and up.
In my experience, not all students learn the same. When I explain how to solve a problem to an Algebra
student, I sometimes must find a different way to teach it, so they understand. So many factors contribute
to this problem. Most students are visual, and several students are visual and kinesthetic, very few are
auditory learners. “Children who are visual learners often enjoy reading and drawing, and they learn
best when they write down notes or use flashcards to memorize information”, (Steadfast Academy,
2020). Another problem may be the pace or time allotted. Many teachers in elementary schools need to
teach all subjects every day, leaving little time to focus on individual students that are not able to learn at
